03 / How it works

How to convert an image to vector

  1. step_01

    Upload

Drop a PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF or BMP. Large images are scaled to 800px on your device before upload.

  2. step_02

    Pick a style

Logo, illustration, black & white line art or detailed. Each preset tunes colors, smoothing and noise removal.

  3. step_03

    Download SVG

Compare raster and vector side by side, then download a real SVG made of paths — ready for Figma, Illustrator, Inkscape or Cricut.

Real paths, not embedded pixels

Every shape becomes an SVG path with its own fill, so you can recolor, edit nodes and scale without blur.

Color quantization

Presets reduce your image to a clean palette (2 to 48 colors) before tracing, keeping files small and edges crisp.

Pay only for results

One credit per successful conversion. If tracing fails, you are not charged.

Raster vs. vector, explained

What does "image to vector" mean?

A raster image (PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF or BMP) is a grid of colored pixels. Enlarge it and the pixels become visible as jagged steps and blur. A vector graphic stores shapes instead: points, curves and fills described with math. An SVG file can be scaled from a favicon to a billboard without losing sharpness.

Vectorizing, also called image tracing, is the process of finding the edges and color regions in a bitmap and redrawing them as paths. The result is a file you can recolor, edit node by node, and cut or print at any size.

When you need a vector file

Printers, sign makers and embroidery shops usually ask for vector artwork. Cutting machines such as Cricut and Silhouette, laser cutters and vinyl plotters follow paths, so they need SVG, DXF or similar outlines rather than pixels.

Designers also convert old logos that only exist as small PNGs or screenshots, icons that must stay crisp on high-density screens, and hand-drawn sketches that should become clean line art for Figma, Illustrator or Inkscape.

How the converter traces your picture

First, the image is scaled down on your device to at most 800 pixels on the longest side and sent to our server. The selected preset then reduces the picture to a limited palette (2 colors for line art, up to 48 for detailed images), which removes noise and JPEG artifacts.

Next, the outline of every color region is traced and smoothed into straight segments and curves, tiny specks are dropped, and the shapes are written out as SVG paths with their fill colors. You can compare the original and the result before downloading.

Tips for a cleaner SVG

Start from the largest, sharpest version of the artwork you have. Crop away empty borders and backgrounds you do not need. Choose the Logo preset for flat graphics with a few solid colors, Line art for black ink drawings and signatures, Illustration for flat art with more shades, and Detailed only when you really need many colors.

Photographs turn into thousands of small shapes and large files. Vectorizing works best on logos, icons, stickers, clip art, lettering and other artwork with clear edges and solid fills.

Online converter or Illustrator?

Adobe Illustrator (Image Trace) and Inkscape (Trace Bitmap) can also convert a PNG or JPG to vector, and they give fine manual control, but they require installing desktop software and learning the tracing settings.

An online converter is faster for everyday jobs: upload, pick a preset, compare and download. If the automatic result needs touch-ups, open the downloaded SVG in any vector editor and adjust the paths there.

SVG vs. PNG vs. PDF

PNG and JPG are pixel formats: perfect for photos and screenshots, but fixed to one resolution. SVG is the web standard for vector graphics; it is text-based, usually small for simple artwork, and can be styled with CSS or animated. PDF and EPS can also contain vectors and are common in print workflows; most design apps can export an SVG to those formats when a print shop asks for them.

For websites, apps, cutting machines and logo files, SVG is usually the most flexible choice, which is why this converter outputs SVG.

File formats and privacy

Input formats are PNG, JPG/JPEG, WEBP, GIF and BMP. The output is a standard SVG that opens in browsers, Figma, Illustrator, Inkscape, Affinity Designer and Cricut Design Space.

Images are processed to create your SVG and the result is returned to your browser for download. Only upload artwork you have the rights to use.

Image to vector FAQ

What is ImageToVector?

ImageToVector (imagetovector.app) is an online image to vector converter. It turns raster images (PNG, JPG, WEBP) into SVG vector graphics made of editable paths.

How do I convert an image to vector?

Upload your image, choose a preset (logo, illustration, black & white or detailed), click Convert to SVG, then download the file.

How much does it cost?

Each successful conversion uses 1 credit. Failed conversions are not charged. You can buy credit packs on the pricing section.

What images work best?

Logos, icons, flat illustrations and line art with clear edges give the cleanest vectors. Photos produce many shapes and larger files.

Which formats are supported?

Input: PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF and BMP, scaled to at most 800px per side. Output: SVG.

Is the image to vector converter free?

Creating an account is free. Each successful conversion uses 1 credit, and credits come with the paid plans on the pricing section. Failed conversions never cost credits.

Is this AI vectorization?

No. ImageToVector uses an algorithmic tracer (color quantization plus edge tracing), not a generative AI model, so it never invents details that are not in your image.

Can I use the SVG with Cricut or a laser cutter?

Yes. The output is a standard SVG made of filled paths, which Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio and most laser software can import. Simple artwork with few colors cuts best.

Can I use the SVGs commercially?

Yes, as long as you own the rights to the original image you uploaded.

Stop upscaling pixels. Start drawing paths.
