How to convert PNG to SVG
- step_01
Upload your PNG
Drop a PNG into the converter above or click to choose a file. Transparent PNG files are fine. WEBP, GIF and BMP also work.
- step_02
Pick a preset
Choose Logo for flat logos and icons, Illustration for cartoons, Line art for black and white drawings, or Detailed for complex art.
- step_03
Download the SVG
Press Vectorize, preview the result, then download the .svg file. It costs 1 credit, and a failed conversion costs nothing.

Converting PNG to SVG, explained
PNG vs. SVG: what actually changes
A PNG is a raster image: a fixed grid of colored pixels. It is lossless and supports transparency, which is why it is the default format for logos and screenshots. But a PNG has a fixed resolution. Scale a 500 pixel logo up for a banner or a T-shirt and the edges turn soft and jagged.
An SVG is a vector image: a text file that describes shapes with coordinates and curves. A browser or printer redraws those shapes at whatever size it needs, so a vector logo is as sharp on a business card as on a billboard. SVG files are also editable: every shape can be recolored, moved or removed.
Converting PNG to SVG means recovering those shapes from the pixels. Saving a PNG with an .svg extension or embedding it inside an SVG does not do this; the picture is still pixels. A tracer actually redraws the outlines as paths.
Which PNG files convert best
The ideal PNG for vectorizing is a flat logo, icon, emoji-style graphic, badge, sticker design or simple illustration with solid colors and clear edges. Upload the largest version you have. A 1000 pixel logo traces much more smoothly than a 64 pixel favicon, because the tracer has more edge information to follow.
Screenshots of user interfaces, PNG photos, and artwork with drop shadows or gradients will convert, but they turn into many small color bands. If you only need one part of a design, crop it first.
Transparent PNG backgrounds
PNG is popular because it can have a transparent background. The converter reads the alpha channel along with the colors, so a logo on a transparent background comes back without a visible background: transparent areas are traced as fully transparent (opacity 0) shapes. If you want the leanest file, select that invisible background path in your vector editor and delete it.
Semi-transparent edges (anti-aliasing and soft shadows) are where tracers struggle most. If the outline of your logo looks fringed, try the Logo preset, which merges similar colors more aggressively.
What happens when you press Vectorize
Your browser scales the picture so its longest side is at most 800 pixels and sends only the raw pixel colors to our server. The server runs a classic tracing algorithm (the open-source imagetracerjs library): it reduces the image to a small palette, finds the outline of every area that shares a color, and fits straight lines and quadratic curves along those outlines. The result is a standard SVG file made of filled paths that you can open in Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma, Affinity Designer, or any web browser.
This is a tracer, not an AI model. It does not invent detail, guess what is behind an object, or redraw your artwork in a new style. It follows the edges that are actually in your pixels. That makes it fast, predictable and cheap, and it means the output is only as clean as the input.
Choosing the right preset
Logo uses a small palette and smooth curves, which suits flat logos, icons, stickers and badges. Illustration keeps more colors for flat cartoon artwork. Line art produces a two-tone result for sketches, signatures, stamps and scanned ink drawings. Detailed keeps the most colors and the finest shapes; it is the closest you will get to a photo, but files get large and the look is posterized rather than photographic.
If the first result looks noisy, try a simpler preset before anything else. Fewer colors almost always means cleaner shapes and a smaller file.
Common uses for PNG to SVG
People convert PNG to SVG to rescue a logo when the original vector file is lost, to prepare designs for Cricut, Silhouette and laser cutters, to make crisp icons for websites, to print merch and signage, and to embroider or vinyl-cut artwork. Cutting machines need closed vector paths, which is exactly what a tracer produces.
Honest limits
Photographs, soft gradients, fur, hair and heavy textures do not become crisp vectors with any tracer. You will get a poster-style SVG with visible color bands. Very small text (under roughly 12 pixels tall in the source) may merge or lose its counters. Because images are scaled to 800 pixels before tracing, extremely detailed artwork can lose fine lines. For production logos, treat the SVG as a strong starting point and tidy it up in a vector editor.
If a conversion fails or the server cannot finish it, no credit is taken.
Privacy and file handling
Your file never leaves your browser as a file: only the downsized pixel data is posted for tracing, and the SVG is returned straight to you. We do not keep a gallery of uploads or use your images to train anything. You need a free account so that credits can be tracked; each successful conversion costs 1 credit.
04 / FAQ
PNG to SVG FAQ
How do I convert a PNG to SVG?
Upload the PNG in the converter on this page, choose a preset such as Logo, press Vectorize, and download the SVG. The whole process takes a few seconds.
Will my transparent background stay transparent?
Yes. Transparent pixels are traced as fully transparent shapes, so the SVG shows no background. You can delete that invisible path in any vector editor for a smaller file.
Is the SVG a real vector or just an embedded PNG?
It is a real vector. The file contains traced path shapes and no embedded bitmap, so it scales without blurring.
Can I use the SVG with Cricut or Silhouette?
Yes. Use the Logo or Line art preset for clean closed shapes, then upload the SVG to Cricut Design Space or Silhouette Studio.
What is the maximum PNG size?
Any size can be uploaded; your browser scales it to 800 pixels on the longest side before tracing, which keeps conversions fast.
Can I convert to SVG with color?
Yes. The Logo, Illustration and Detailed presets keep the main colors of your image as separate filled shapes (from about 8 up to 48 colors). Only the Line art preset produces a two-tone result.
Does this use AI?
No. It uses a classic color-quantization and path-fitting tracer. It is fast and deterministic, and it does not add or invent detail. Clean, high-contrast artwork gives the best results.
Can I edit the SVG afterwards?
Yes. The output is a plain SVG made of filled paths. Open it in Inkscape, Illustrator, Figma or Affinity Designer to recolor shapes, delete stray specks, or join paths.
Is it free?
New accounts receive free credits to try the converter. Each successful conversion costs 1 credit, and failed conversions are free. Paid plans add more credits if you convert often.
